This position maintains the Parks and assists Crew Leader in supervising laborers and community service workers. Assistance is provided by picking up litter, operating and equipment, mowers, as well as hand equipment; helps supervisor in handling daily duties in the absence of the Crew Leader.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Effectively communicate clearly with supervisors, city personnel, vendors and citizens in person and/or via an electronic device.
* Help supervise and work with community service workers and laborers in the performance of tasks.
* Maintain turf grass and landscape plants by mowing, string trimming, edging, hedging and blowing as needed.
* Prepare sports fields including softball, baseball, soccer fields and other athletic sports.
* Utilize backpack blowers, chainsaws, spin trimmers and various push and riding, self-propelled mowers, as well as perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
* Properly operate, maintain, and care for any assigned equipment.
* Perform minor maintenance on hand tools and power equipment and be able to sharpen mower blades.
* Plant horticultural materials including roses, trees, shrubs, trees, and bedding plants as necessary.
* Trim plants properly and remove dead plants as needed.
* Operate tractors, stump grinder, chipper and motor vehicles and haul a trailer.
* Pick up litter and clean restrooms.
* Clean work areas once work is accomplished.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Must have knowledge of horticulture practices, equipment, basic construction skills, proper use of landscape tools and traffic laws.
* Must be able to treat turf, shrubs and trees for disease, insects and weed control.
* Must have knowledge of departmental regulations pertaining to tasks.
* Must be available to work overtime as needed.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
* Must be able to work in various weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, temperature changes, humidity, heights, vibration, wetness, dryness, noises 80-dB and over, fumes, dust, chemicals, allergens, detergents, mechanical hazards, and moving objects.
* Must be able to stand 7-hours daily; bend, stoop, twist, turn, climb, crouch, balance, kneel, run, grasp, jump, hear, see, depth perception, and speak clearly and walk 4-hours daily; crawl and sit
* hour daily; push and pull up to 80-lbs. up to 6-hours daily; lift and carry up to 50-lbs.
* Must be able to positively contribute to department culture.
Education and Experience:
Must have over one (1) year of experience in maintenance of grounds including but not limited to operating tractors, mowers, or related lawn and landscaping equipment. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License with a clear driving record.
High School Diploma or GED is preferred.

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
